Actors Dress in Historic Costumes for Immigration Walking Tours

Thousands of artifacts were uncovered during an excavation in Ontario, shedding light on one of Toronto’s first immigrant enclaves. A walking tour through the area, “Women of the Ward,” brought the history to life. Local actors were dressed in period costumes and played women who worked and lived in St. John’s Ward.

Through the 1800s and into the mid-1900s, immigrants from Ireland, China, Israel, and Africa settled in Toronto because of the economic opportunities and affordable housing. Urban affairs journalist, John Lorinc, said, “The Ward helps explain why Toronto has become the city it has become today.” Lorinc, who led the tour, explained it was the first region where those of different races and ethnicities had to figure out what it meant to be a part of the United Kingdom. The media has always shown the Ward in a filthy, crime-ridden, and moral deprived way, but Lorinc tried to show a more positive light to the region when writing his book. There was cultural texture to the area, and there was entrepreneurial activity. Most of the original neighborhood is gone today as it was once known. It was replaced with office towers, commercial buildings, and hospitals. The dozens of people that attended the walk were excited to learn about the lesser realized history of the downtown core. Canada is a very diverse and welcoming country. If you and your family are looking for a better life, contact Canada Immigration Express.
