Over the next three years, the Canadian government is planning to spend over $35 million to improve on services provided to immigrants who settle in small towns and rural communities. Sean Fraser, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister, announced the plan, which will have $21 million be designated for developing nine new Resettlement Assistance Program chapters in New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
An additional $14 million is for enhancing case management services to help vulnerable immigrants put down roots into new regions. It will also be a part of a pilot program to boost Francophonie case management in The Prairies. The minister said newcomers play a vital role in economic success, diversity, and adding to the richness of Canadian communities, especially as the country is facing a labor force challenge after the global pandemic. Fraser said settlement and resettlement services are essential after the COVID pandemic, which has made beginning a new life in a new place even more daunting.
The Resettlement Assistance Program provides assistance to government-assisted refugees and is found in every province outside of Quebec. People are given a one-time start-up allowance and monthly income support for up to a year.
