A former Syrian refugee has been working as an emergency health worker in Fort St. John since early July. 

For 2 ½ years, he worked with Vancouver’s Red Cross in the Lower Mainland. Hassan Al Kontar became known internationally after being stranded in an airport in Malaysia for several months. Now, traveling to northern British Columbia has broadened his Canadian experience. Al Kontar has become a Canadian permanent resident after not having the paperwork to remain in Kuala Lumpur and not wanting to return to Syria.

He wasn’t welcome anywhere else until November 2018, when a sponsor from Whistler, BC, helped him with finding asylum in Canada. Al Kontar has relocated to Fort St. John for a few months to help with coronavirus vaccinations. He said it is one of the best decisions he has ever made. He made the trip by car from Vancouver to Fort St. John. He loves the beautiful wide, open, flat, green land in the north.

Al Kontar worked as a marketing insurance manager in the UAE, but he lost his work permit due to the Syrian Civil War, putting his immigration status in limbo.
