Stateless Refugee Finds Sanctuary and Kindness in Canada

Canada Immigration Express - Refugee

A Syrian refugee, trying to escape was in his home country, found himself stuck in Malaysia after being denied entry to any country. Out of options, Al Kontar started using social media to tell his story. He tweeted about his life at the airport, and it went viral. He found his purpose in life by telling his story and his people’s story. A group of volunteers in Canada, led by Laurie Cooper, learned about Kontar and began organizing on his behalf. Cooper crowdsourced money, helped Kontar navigate the asylum system, coordinated with travelers around the world to make sure he had food, money, and supplies, and lobbied the government. Kontar said this group restored his faith in humanity.

The Whistler, BC group, teamed up with the British Columbia Muslim Association and offered to sponsor Kontar as a refugee in Canada.

The hard work paid off when the government and a lawyer quietly negotiated his release. He is now a permanent resident of Canada and lives in Abbotsford, BC. He has turned his situation into helping other refugees.
