Brazilian Cowboy Will End Epic Horseback Journey in Calgary

Filipe Masetti Leite, was born in Brazil, but has lived in Canada since he was nine. He wants to become a Canadian citizen and proudly wears the Canadian flag on the arm of his black bomber jacket. His family applied for citizenship for humanitarian reasons years earlier but were denied.

He said he feels Canadian. He was inspired and challenged to become a long rider, a term used to describe an equestrian who has ridden over 1,600 kilometers in a single journey, by Aime Tschiffely. He was a Swiss schoolteacher who rode 16,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires to New York City in 1925.

Masetti Leite just finished a ride from Alaska to Calgary, covering 3,400 kilometers. This wasn’t his first. He rode from Calgary to his parent’s home of Espirito Santo do Pinhal, Sao Paulo, between 2012 to 2014. He rode over 7,000 kilometers from Brazil to Patagonia, in 2016. Masetti Leite documented his travels and wrote “Long Ride Home: Guts and Guns and Grizzlies, 800 Days Through the Americas in a Saddle.” He has decided his ride to Calgary would be his last.
