Canadian Immigration Drives Record Population Growth

The population of Canada rose over a percent in July 2019 from one year earlier. This shows the fastest pace of growth in population since 1990, according to the government’s statistics agency.

The population increased 531,497, reaching 37.6 million, the largest increase on record. It is also the fastest growth among the Group of Seven countries. The rapid increase has been driven primarily by immigration to Canada.

There were over 300,000 newcomers accepted to Canada in the past year. Students and asylum applicants, non-permanent residents, increased by 171,536, which is also another record.
